In this episode, I talk about the power of challenging and how important it is that you continuously test your limit to help you grow as a person but also to make it exciting and memorable too.
After setting my personal challenges, I realised the benefits of doing so and I wanted to talk about it in order to encourage you to do the same.
Because if you don’t challenge yourself, then you don’t know what you are capable of.

Today I want to talk about the power of challenging yourself. The reason I wanna talk about that is because today, as of the time of recording, I have finished a 90-day challenge with this community membership group I’m part of called Content Marketing Academy and of course, it based around content. I’ve challenged myself over the 90 days to create consistent content and that is to record and publish a podcast every week, and also publish a blog post every week as well.

I’m not one to be a serial content creator, but I thought, “you know what, I need to challenge myself,” and I’ve done it. And today at the time of recording, I’ve done it and completed it successfully. I’m really, really chuffed with that, and that’s why I want to talk about the power of challenging yourself because for me, you should always try to have something that’s going to stretch your limit or that kind of tests you.
That kind of puts you out of your comfort zone because that can help you to grow.
That can help you to realise that you can do more than you think as well. It just stops you from being on auto pilot. Some people can get that stuck in a rut kind of thing in your life, but if you challenge yourself, you’re gonna get to flex your muscle. You get to flex that brainpower of yours. Maybe if even physically you become stronger. It could be anything.
I’ve never done a podcast before, but I challenge myself and I’m doing it now. I’ve never done videos before, but that is my next challenge, is to create video consistently. There are different ways you can create challenge and you can challenge yourself. Let’s go through this.
The obvious one for example is to learn a new skill. It could be something as small as something like cooking. Maybe cook a meal regularly or you want to earn a cuisine, or it could be something a bit more complex like, I don’t know. For example, to learn how to craft your own table for example. You can do that if you wan to. If that’s something that you really want to do, you can do that.
Another thing that you can do to challenge yourself is to find out what are you scared of and face it head on, consistently of course. For example, if you are scared of recording yourself on a video or audio, push yourself out there to overcome that fear and do it. Maybe you wanna test a small, maybe you wanna do it quietly and privately, and then maybe you wanna do it in public after that. But, face your fear head on.
I’m not saying if you have a fear of a great white shark you should jump in the water and go toward it. I’m just saying, just face your fear and you never know what you could get out of it as well.
Another way to challenge yourself is to do that hobby that you have always wanted to do. Don’t procrastinate any longer. Just do it. Just start the process by going to classes and just start practising small. Don’t waste time anymore. If you wanted to do something that you have always wanted to do, just challenge yourself and do it.
Another thing that you could do to make sure that you are consistent with your challenge is to have someone to be accountable to. If you have a friend, spouse, family member, anybody that you have good relationship with and if you tell that person to make sure that you are keeping on top of your challenge, then that will make sure will kind of … You don’t want to disappoint him kind of thing and that person will keep an eye on you. Have someone that you can trust to do that.
And if you haven’t met that challenge, if you gone off the rail for a bad reason, life can happen. Maybe something get in the way, which is understandable. But if something that is small and you just didn’t do your challenge, maybe you should think of a punishment between you to. Like for example, put money away into a charity box and give it away.
Or maybe you should give money to a party that you hate. That will kind of make you really frustrated that, “I’m giving money away to this group of party that I don’t like.”
Have some kind of accountability programme that you have with whoever you trust.
Another way you can challenge yourself is to even just travel. Travel to a location that you never would’ve though of in the first place. If you go abroad, instead of going the usual popular cities and popular countries, go somewhere completely obscure or a random town or go somewhere small just to see what’s there and just to challenge yourself.
And even if you’re not going abroad, it can be local. Some people just don’t really investigate or go around the country that they live in or the city that they live in and go somewhere completely different. Do that. Just challenge yourself and go somewhere that you never would’ve thought of before.
And of course, when it comes to challenging yourself, make sure you do it consistently. It could be different ways. It could be maybe every day for half an hour you have to focus on a project. Maybe every week you have to commit one hour a week to this kind of project, or maybe every week you have to say, “I have done this task,” and then next week, ” I have done this task.” Whatever it is, set yourself a challenge, set yourself a goal and do it consistently because that’s the only way you can challenge yourself as well.
There’s a really good TED Talk, it’s available you can watch by Matt Cutts. He used to work at Google and he did like a three minute, I think three minutes, 20 seconds of TED Talk. It’s about trying to do something new for 30 days. I’ll put the link in the show notes because it’s really, really interesting and it’d only three minutes. You have to watch it, it’s really, really good.
The idea is that, for 30 days, you should try something new. You should challenge yourself and just try something new. He also said that it’s not just about adding something into your life and challenge yourself in 30 days, you can subtract something in your life and use that as a challenge. For example, it could be something simple like you want to reduce the amount of coffee that you drink or maybe you want to watch less TV.
Maybe you want to limit the amount of time you spend on social media site. These are also challenges that you can force yourself to do over the 30 days as well. If there’s something in your life that you know you should subtract, subtract even. If so, make that a challenge.
Of course, once the challenge ends, you should think about what has been going on, think about the process and how you felt throughout the process. And also, keep going if you wanted to keep going. There’s something that, especially if you’re going to subtract things in your life that is maybe not beneficial, then obviously when the challenge is over, you keep it going. Keep that momentum going as well. Don’t get back int that bad habit undoing all that hard work that you have built up.
But again, you can also create another challenge after that. There may be some things which are worth being inconsistent on, and keep after that 30 day, 60 days, whatever it is. But then maybe after 30 days, you want to try something new as well and do something different. There’s nothing with that as well. There is a quote in that TED Talk I told you about by Matt Cutts, which I really love as well. He said, “Instead of the months flying by forgotten, the time was much more memorable.”
You have learnt new skills and you have created amazing memories as well. It could be som many things in there. I like that quote. So, think about that. Always challenge yourself. Think about what you want to do as well after you listen to the podcast and create great memories. And also watch yourself grow as well.
